Identification

Flower: Green, bristly, bottlebrush-like flower spikes that bloom from midsummer through early fall.

Leaves: Long, narrow, and flat leaves with a rough texture.

Stems: Erect, smooth, and slightly flattened, growing up to 60 cm tall.

Growing Environment: Prefers well-drained soils in fields, roadsides, and disturbed areas.

Growth Habit: An annual grass that forms dense clumps of erect stems topped with characteristic bristly flower spikes. It spreads rapidly by seed and can form large patches. In situ, green foxtail often appears as clumps of grass with distinctive, brush-like seed heads, particularly in disturbed areas such as road rights-of-way and fields.
