Identification

Flower: Bright blue, funnel-shaped flowers with prominent red stamens, blooming from late spring through summer.

Growing Environment: Prefers dry, well-drained soils, especially in disturbed areas, roadsides, and pastures.

Growth Habit: Biennial or perennial herb that can reach heights of up to 1 meter. In its first year, it forms a basal rosette of rough, hairy leaves, and in its second year, it sends up a tall, branching flower spike covered in bristly hairs. In situ, blueweed often forms dense colonies of tall, spiky plants with striking blue flowers.
