Black Henbane

Latin Name: Hyoscyamus niger

Identification

Flower: Pale yellow with dark purple veins, funnel-shaped, and somewhat sticky. Flowers bloom from mid to late summer.

Leaves: Large, oval to oblong, deeply lobed, and hairy with a foul smell when crushed.

Stems: Erect, sticky, and hairy, growing up to 1 meter tall.

Growing Environment: Prefers disturbed soils, roadsides, and waste areas.

Growth Habit: A biennial herb that grows to about 1 meter in height. In its first year, it forms a rosette of leaves, and in the second year, it sends up a tall flowering stalk. The plant has a sprawling, weedy appearance and can form dense stands in areas of disturbed soil. In situ, it often appears in waste areas or alongside roads, forming patches of sickly green and purple.
