Bishop’s Goutweed

Latin Name: Aegopodium podagraria

Priority Ranking: Medium Priority

Identification

Flower: White, umbrella-shaped flower clusters (umbels), blooming in early to mid-summer.

Leaves: Compound, green or variegated leaves with serrated edges, forming dense mats.

Stems: Hollow, grooved, and branching.

Growing Environment: Prefers moist, shaded areas such as woodlands and gardens.

Growth Habit: A vigorous perennial groundcover that spreads rapidly via underground rhizomes. It forms dense, sprawling mats that can smother other vegetation. The plant grows to about 30-50 cm in height and can cover large areas. In situ, it forms extensive groundcover patches in shaded or semi-shaded areas, creating a uniform green layer that crowds out most other plants.

Priority Ranking: Medium Priority

Impacts on Environment

Impacts: Highly invasive; its rapid spread through rhizomes making it difficult to control once established.
