Latin Name: Impatiens glandulifera

Identification

Flower: Pink, purple, or white, helmet-shaped flowers that bloom from midsummer through fall.

Leaves: Opposite or whorled, lance-shaped, serrated leaves.

Stems: Erect, smooth, and hollow, growing up to 2 meters tall.

Growing Environment: Prefers moist, well-drained soils in riparian zones, wetlands, and disturbed areas.

Growth Habit: A fast-growing annual that spreads rapidly by seed and forms dense stands in moist habitats. It can outcompete native vegetation and thrives in wet conditions. In situ, Himalayan balsam appears as tall, dense stands with colourful flowers along streambanks and wetlands.
